Vote Tabulating Update

It’s been a week since the polls closed and during that time, I’ve been going through, cleaning up the entries as best I can. Granted, I haven’t been able to work on it full time due to Anime Expo eating up a chunk of work-hours that would otherwise have gone towards tabulating the submissions (3 days worth, more or less). So hang tight! If you’ve been following the Animusic Tourney’s Twitter account, you’ll know that I’m about halfway through the cleanup. The next step after taking care of variations like Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi, Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Haruhi Suzumiya no Yuutsu, The Yuutsu of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Suzumiya Haruhi no Melancholy is to scour for duplicates (like: “Ai no Field” and “Ai no Rinkaku”), and then after that, reconciling the vote totals to make sure it all matches up. With 211 nomination submissions, it’ll be a bit to go through, but nothing insurmountable though!

Based on the totals as they are now, any song that has a point total of 38 or more will make the cutoff for the main event, which will include 256 tracks in a single-elimination, head-to-head format. Chances are high that we’ll need to do a preliminary round anyway, so you’ll get a chance to see which songs are on the cusp, waiting for their chance to shine. And while we’re at it, here’s a peek at the top 10 songs based on point totals:

Top 10 Anime Songs

Based on the progress, I’d say we can have the preliminary round up in a week and I’ll release the entirety of the submissions in raw and processed formats around that time for people who really want to play with the data. In the meantime, thank you for your patience! A shoutout to ratsavage for recommending I use Openrefine to parse and order the data, and if it weren’t for that, I think my life would be much more miserable than it is now as the workload would be much bigger and more painful. Hooray for technology!

    • I’m thrilled to see it there too! I made sure it was pretty high up on my list because I was afraid that no one else would think to nominate it.
Shinsekai Yori wasn’t really that popular. I mean, the people that watched it liked it, but not very many people watched it to begin with. If you go by MAL stats for example, Shinsekai Yori has 55K viewers and every other series on this top 11 nominees list is over 120K. More than double.
So either Wareta Ringo was an especially impactful song, or this tournament just happened to attract an unusually large number of SSY fans 😛

      • I really enjoyed Shinsekai Yori, but I thought the full version of Wareta Ringo was really bland. TV cut was great though. Maybe if I had a top 20 or top 30 it would make it…

  1. Personally, considering how hyped up I’ve been about it, I think my 15 nominations would have been only a copypaste of the tracklist of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Part 2 OST. But jokes aside, I’m happy for the presence of Magia and Wareta Ringo. Hacking to the Gate? Even with my avatar… it’s good, but I don’t love it especially. Too bad there are not a few more less known gems. I saw someone nominated “Shut up and explode” from Xam’d, that one’s really good! Also, why “Tabi no Touchouu” instead of “Ringo Biyori” from Spice and Wolf?

  2. Extremely confused over “Hacking to the Gate”, but okay. It’s nice to see “Secret Base” and “Wareta Ringo” up there, though.

But if “Tank!” or “A Cruel Angel’s Thesis” wins I don’t know what I’ll do. It’s such typical winner choices it’s just boring.

    • It probably will though, I mean once the fat is cut in the first few rounds it will largely come down to which songs are most iconic and most imminently popular. Think of the first Sai Mecha where EVA Unit 01 won it all. I’m sure it got a push from the recent rebuild movies but it is an iconic mecha in its own right. It’s opponent the Zaku II is clearly iconic but hasn’t had enough recent hype despite the forever ongoing Gundam franchise.

My hope with this music tourney is that some of the more recent popular songs will fall prey to old classics that might have been overlooked like Ai wo Torimodose or Oboete imasu ka or even Sore ga ai deshou? from FUMOFFU.

      • Yeah, the iconic ones will definitely gather steam as voting begins. It can’t be helped. They are/were the best of their times and will probably stand the test of time as well. Personally, as an old fogey, I don’t mind it 🙂 If an old classic can battle off a new popular one, that would be very interesting! And as long as people start listening to songs they wouldn’t normally, I’m happy!

    • Yeah, that’s the most immediate concern. But then again, it’s a popularity contest so we’re not trying to change the world here 🙂 A little eyebrow-raising at the top 10, but it’s what the people want heh!

    • Yeah, feel free to spread it around, especially now that we’ve hit the voting phase and all they have to do is listen to some music and click a button to vote for the song they like best 🙂
